| Architect, designer of the Sydney Opera House, born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy. In 1956 he won an international competition with his imaginative design for the Opera House but project costs escalated and in the ensuing controversy he resigned (1966). His other buildings include the Bank Melhi (Teheran), the Kuwait House of Parliament, Bagsvaerd Church (Copenhagen), and Paustian's House of Furniture (Copenhagen). In 1966 he won the competition for the design of the Zürich Schausspielhaus. He has received many design awards, including the 2003 Pritzker Architecture Prize for his work on Sydney Opera House. |
