| biography:
| Dutch politician, born in The Hague, W Netherlands. After studying in Wageningen and Johns Hopkins University (USA) he worked for the World Bank (1973–7), and then in a variety of semi-political and academic posts in The Netherlands. During 1986–90 he led the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD) in the Upper House, and in 1990–4 again worked in international affairs. In 1994 he became minister for the West Indies and minister of defence at a time when the deployment of Dutch troops in Bosnia had disastrous results. |
