| Trade unionist, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. He was general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union (1969–78), favouring the decentralization of trade union power to the local branches, and had some influence on the Labour government's policies of 1974–6. Made a Companion of Honour in 1978, his autobiography, Union Man, was published in 1986. |
