| biography:
| Icelandic national hero and clergyman, the last Roman Catholic bishop in Iceland, born in Eyjafjörður, N Iceland. He was a turbulent, charismatic figure, and a poet of both religious and satirical verse. In 1524 he was consecrated Bishop of Hólar. He fiercely resisted the imposition of Lutheranism from Denmark by the crown, and was declared an outlaw. Eventually he and two of his sons were captured in an ambush, and summarily beheaded. |
