| Biochemist, born in Takaoka, WC Japan. He studied chemical engineering at Tokyo and Glasgow universities, and in 1887 opened his own factory, the first to make superphosphate fertilizer in Japan. In his private laboratory he developed a starch-digesting enzyme, and in 1890 went to the USA to develop its use in the distilling industry, setting up an industrial biochemical laboratory at Clifton, NJ. In 1901 he isolated crystalline adrenaline (epinephrine) from the suprarenal gland, the first hormone to be isolated in pure form from a natural source. |
