John or Jan I (of Holland and Zeeland)
|
| biography:
| Count of Holland and Zeeland, the son of Floris V and Beatrix of Dampierre. He was educated in England at the court of Edward I, whose daughter Elizabeth he married in 1297, and returned to Holland after Floris V was murdered in 1296. He never ruled independently, but was at first controlled by the Anglophile John of Renesse, and from 1297 by Wolfert I of Borselen, who drove out Renesse. In 1299, after Wolfert was assassinated, the towns invited Count John I of Hainault (of Avesnes) to take over as regent. Two weeks later John I of Holland died. He was the last count of the Holland dynasty. |
