| Franciscan monk and traveller, born in Umbria, C Italy. A disciple of Francis of Assisi, he was head of the mission sent by Pope Innocent IV to the Emperor of the Mongols. He started from Lyon in April 1245, crossed the Volga in April 1246, and in July reached the Karakoram Mts. The latter part of the journey across C Asia was a ride of nearly 3000 mi in 100 days, a feat of endurance for a man over 60 years of age. He returned in 1247, and wrote an account of his travels and a profile of the Mongol peoples Historia Mongalorum. He was later appointed Archbishop of Autivari. |
