| Anabaptist leader, born in Leyden, W Netherlands. He worked as a tailor, merchant, and innkeeper, and became noted as an orator. Turning Anabaptist, he went to Münster, became head of the movement, and set up a ‘kingdom of Zion’, with polygamy and community of goods. In 1535 the city was taken by the Bishop of Münster, and John and his accomplices were executed. |
