| biography:
| Theologian and hymn writer of the Eastern Church, born in Damascus. He was educated by the Italian monk, Cosmas, and defended the use of images in church worship during the iconoclastic controversy. His later years were spent in a monastery near Jerusalem, where he was ordained. Feast day 4 December. |
