| biography:
| King of Bohemia and Count of Luxemburg, the son of Henry V of Luxemburg (the later Emperor Henry VII) and Margaret of Brabant. In 1310 he married Elizabeth, heiress of Bohemia, which he expanded at the expense of Poland. He fought repeatedly against John III of Brabant, who was the most important supporter of England in the Low Countries at the time, and also against Ludwig of Bavaria. In 1339 he went blind. He managed to get his son, Charles IV, elected as the opposition candidate to Ludwig in 1346. He was a vassal of Philip VI of France and was killed at Crecy. |
