| Celebrated Scottish Border freebooter and cattle-rustler (‘reiver’), and hero of many Border ballads. He was either John Armstrong of Gilnockie Tower, near Langholm, Dumfries and Galloway, who was hanged in 1529, or his brother John Armstrong (‘Black Jock’) of Mangerton, who was executed in 1530. |
