| biography:
| Cultural anthropologist and academic administrator, born in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. She studied at Oberlin College, received a PhD from Northwestern (1967), and taught at the University of California, Los Angeles (where she headed the black studies programme), the University of Massachusetts, and Hunter College, New York City. In 1987 she was appointed president of Spelman College, Atlanta. She wrote and was editor of All American Women (1986) and Anthropology for the Nineties (1988). |
