| Astronaut, born in San Francisco, California, USA. He entered the US Navy in 1952 and became a carrier-based fighter pilot (1955–9), a navy test pilot (1959–62), and then a NASA astronaut. He has flown in space a record six times: twice in the Gemini programme, twice in the Apollo programme (Apollos 10 and 16), and twice as commander of the space shuttle, including its first flight, STS-1, in 1981. Having retired from the navy in 1976 with the rank of captain, he remains an active member of the NASA astronaut corps. |
