| biography:
| Pope (1316–34), one of the most celebrated of the popes of Avignon, born in Cahors, SC France. He intervened in the contest for the imperial crown between Louis of Bavaria and Frederick of Austria, supporting the latter. A long contest ensued both in Germany and Italy between the Guelph (papal) party and the Ghibelline (imperial) party. In 1327 Louis entered Italy, was crowned emperor at Rome, and deposed the pope, setting up an antipope (1328). Although Guelphic predominance at Rome was later restored, John died at Avignon. |
