| biography:
| Pope (955–64), born in Rome, Italy, the son of Alberic II, Duke of Spoleto. Elected pope before the age of 20, he led a notoriously immoral life. He was allied with Otto I, who supported him against Berengar II of Italy, and John crowned Otto the first German emperor (962). Otto then issued the Privilegium Ottonianum, ordering John to take an oath of obedience to the emperor; John replied by siding with Berengar against Otto. In 963 Otto called a council to depose John, who was replaced by Pope Leo VIII. After Otto's departure from Italy (964), John had Leo removed from office, but died soon after. |
