| Pope (931–6), born in Rome, Italy. He was the son of Marozia (of the Crescentii family) and her first husband, Alberic of Spoleto, although it is alleged that he was the natural son of Pope Sergius III, his mother's lover. After his mother married her brother-in-law, Hugh of Florence, John's half-brother, Alberic II, imprisoned their mother in the Castel Sant' Angelo, and confined John to the Lateran until his death. He was succeeded by Alberic's son, Ottaviano, as Pope John XII. |
