| biography:
| Roman aristocrat, the son of Alberico di Spoleto and Marozia. He imprisoned his mother, drove her third husband, Ugo di Provenza, King of Italy, out of Rome, and also removed from rule his step-brother, Pope John XI, leaving him with only ecclesiastic powers. He thus became the ruler of Rome (932–54) and took on the title princeps et senator (prince and senator). He prevented Otto I from being crowned, and engineered the election of his son, Ottaviano, to pope as John XII. |
