| biography:
| US senator and cabinet officer, born in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. He served in the US Navy (1944–6) and Marines (1949–52), and worked for the department of justice (1954–60). He became under-secretary (1969–72) and then secretary (1972–4) of the navy, and was the administrator of the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration (1974–6) and then a senator from Virginia (Republican, 1979). He was married twice, to Catherine Mellon (1957–1973) and to Elizabeth Taylor (1976; separated 1981). |
