| Educator and social activist, born in Los Angeles, California, USA. As president of the Carnegie Corp and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (1955–65) and Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare (1965–9), he exerted a powerful innovative influence on mathematics teaching, civil rights, and children's television. He founded the citizens' lobby Common Cause and the volunteer coalition Independent Sector. |
