biography: Anglican clergyman and scholar, born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, EC England, UK. After serving as Dean of Oriel College, Oxford (1925–34), he went to Australia as Archbishop of Brisbane (1934–43). Returning to Britain he became Bishop of Bath and Wells (1943–5) and Bishop of London (1945–55). He wrote numerous books on Christianity and Church history, edited the Church Quarterly Review, wrote a weekly devotional column for the Church Times, and published a brief autobiography, Changeful Page (1965).
