| biography:
| British politician and journalist, born in London, UK. He studied at Leyden, became an MP (1757), and attacked the ministry in his weekly journal, North Briton (1762–3). He was imprisoned, released, then expelled from the house for libel. Re-elected on several occasions, and repeatedly expelled, he came to be seen as a champion of liberty, and an upholder of press freedom. In 1774 he became Lord Mayor of London, and in the same year finally gained admission to parliament, where he remained until his retirement. |
