| Sociologist and psychologist, born in Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA. He studied at Yale ( 1931 BA; 1938 PhD), and worked as a researcher for Yale's Institute of Human Relations (1938–47), using anthropological and psychoanalytical perspectives to inform his work on child development and socialization. Later associated with Harvard, he also directed the Child Development Research Unit of the University of Nairobi (1966–73). He published Child Training and Personality in 1953. |
