| Inventor, born in Starkey, New York, USA. He was apprenticed as a printer, but soon found his real vocation as an inventor. His inventions include a water-filter and the Hyatt roller bearing. He is best remembered for discovering the process to make celluloid (1869), which he did while trying to find a substitute for ivory in billiard balls. His discovery laid the foundation for the plastics industry. |
