| Scout and writer, born in Co Donegal, Ireland. He went to the USA as a child (1854) and later worked as a coal miner. A soldier with the Union forces in the Civil War, he also served as a scout in campaigns against the Sioux and Apache Indians. He established a ranch in New Mexico and wrote books and plays, including The Poet Scout (1879). |
