| Dictionary-maker, born in Colney Hatch, Hertfordshire, SE England, UK. He became an actor, schoolmaster, and (from 1771) peripatetic teacher of elocution. He compiled a Rhyming Dictionary (1775), still in print as the Rhyming Dictionary of the English Language, and a Critical Pronouncing Dictionary (1791). |
