| Geophysicist, born in Brussels, Belgium. He obtained his PhD in volcanology from Stanford University (1936), became a prospector and engineer in the Belgian Congo (1940–6), then joined the University of California, Berkeley (1947–77). He performed thermodynamic investigations of the Earth's internal convection currents, then specialized in the paleomagnetism of iron-titanium oxides. |
