| Painter, born in Kingston, New York, USA. He studied with Gilbert Stuart in Philadelphia (1795–6), then went to Paris (1796–1801), returned briefly to New York (1801–3), and lived in Rome and again in Paris (1803–15). He is known for portraits and historical subjects, such as ‘Ariadne Asleep on the Isle of Naxos’ (1812). He returned to New York, produced cycloramas, the ‘Palace and Gardens of Versailles’ (1816–19), and retired to Kingston, NY (1829). |
