| Pope (872–82), born in Rome, Italy. He strongly opposed St Ignatius, patriarch of Constantinople, on whose death he recognized the reinstatement of Photius as the legitimate patriarch. In 878 John crowned Louis II as king of France, and he also crowned two Holy Roman emperors, Charles II and Charles III. Notable among his reforms was the administrative reorganization of the papal curia. |
