| Physicist, born in Leighlin Bridge, Co Carlow, SE Ireland. Largely self-educated, he became professor at the Royal Institution in 1854. In 1859 he began his researches on heat radiation, followed by the acoustic properties of the atmosphere and the blue colour of the sky, which he suggested was due to the scattering of light by small particles of water. |
