biography: Naturalist, gardener, and traveller, probably born in Suffolk, E England, UK. He became head gardener to the Earls of Salisbury and later to King Charles I. He travelled to Arctic Russia in 1618, and later established the first museum open to the public, the Musaeum Tradescantianum, in Lambeth, London. He and his son, John, introduced many plants into English gardens. A genus of plants (Tradescantia) is named after him.
