| US soldier and inventor, born in Newport, Kentucky, USA. He graduated in 1882 at the Military Academy, and in 1918 originated the Thompson submachine gun, which came to be known as the Tommy gun - a ·45 calibre gun weighing 10 lb. It was first used for military purposes by the US Marines in Nicaragua in 1925. |
