| biography:
| Educator and diplomat, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He became a minister of the Reformed Church of America (1928) and did civil and sanitary engineering missionary work in Iraq (1928–35). He was a professor of religion (1936–8), dean of the faculty (1938–44), and president (1945–53) of the American University of Cairo. Appointed ambassador to Egypt (1961–4), he also served as director of the Middle East Institute at Columbia (1964–71). Among his works is The American Approach to the Arab World (1968). |
