| Astronomer, born in Woodstock, Ontario, SE Canada. At the Dominion Observatory, Ottawa, his work included research in spectroscopy and improvements in the design of the spectrograph. In 1918 the Dominion astrophysical observatory was built at Victoria to accommodate a huge telescope with a 72-in reflector which he had designed. Director there until 1935, he discovered the most massive known binary star, which was named after him. |
