| biography:
| US senator and cabinet officer, born in Lancaster, Ohio, USA, the brother of William T Sherman. A lawyer who became active in the new Republican Party, he served in the US House of Representatives (Republican, Ohio, 1855–61) and the US Senate (1861–77). During these years in the Senate, he concentrated on financial affairs and played a major role in restoring national credit. President Hayes then appointed him secretary of the treasury (1877–81) and he superintended the US's return to the gold standard. He went back to the US Senate (Republican, Ohio, 1881–97) and made his impact with the Sherman Anti-trust Act and the Silver Purchase Act (both 1890). President McKinley named him secretary of state in 1897, but he resigned a year later to protest the administration's decision to go to war with Spain. |
