| Linguist, born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at the University of Leeds, became professor of English at the University of the Punjab, Lahore (1919–28), senior lecturer in phonetics at University College London (1928–38), senior lecturer in the School of Oriental and African Studies in 1938, and head of the department of phonetics and linguistics in the School in 1941. In 1944 he was appointed professor of general linguistics at London University, the first such chair in Great Britain. He is particularly remembered for his development of prosodic phonology and the contextual theory of meaning. |
