| Economist, born in Hollandsburg, Ohio, USA. He was both an economic theorist and a renowned labour historian. He studied at Oberlin College (1888) and Johns Hopkins University, and gained a number of teaching positions including a professorship at the University of Wisconsin (1904–32). He established his reputation with A Documentary History of American Industrial Society (10 vols, 1910–11). An active policymaker, he drafted early employment and union legislation in Wisconsin and then at the federal level. |
