| Protestant reformer, born in Aston, Staffordshire, C England, UK. A rector in London (1532–34), he embraced the Reformed doctrines at Antwerp and Wittenberg. He helped to prepare a revised translation of the Bible, pseudonymously called ‘Thomas Matthew's Bible’ (1537). He returned to England in 1548, preached at St Paul's Cross against Romanism (1553), just after Mary's accession, and was burned as a heretic. |
