| Novelist and war correspondent, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He studied at Harvard, and was an ambulance driver in the later years of World War 1, out of which came his antiwar novel, Three Soldiers (1921). He then worked in Europe and elsewhere as a newspaper correspondent. His best-known work is the trilogy on US life, U.S.A. (1930–6). |
