| Physicist, born in Oak Park, Illinois, USA. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Illinois University, then taught at Chicago, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Cornell (1969–75), and California (Santa Barbara) universities. Collaboration with John Bardeen and Leon Cooper led to the BCS (Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer) theory of superconductivity, for which all three shared the 1972 Nobel Prize for Physics. |
