| biography:
| British trans-Atlantic oarsman and explorer. He studied at the Nautical College, Pangbourne, and served in the Merchant Navy, before doing his national service with the Royal Engineers. After two years at Sandhurt Military Academy, he was commissioned into the Parachute Regiment and served in Canada, Norway, Greece, the Gulf, Kenya, and Malaysia. In 1966 he rowed the Atlantic in 92 days from the USA to Eire with Chay Blyth. He then sailed the Atlantic single-handed to South America, led an expedition that followed the R Amazon from source to sea, and another which crossed the Chilean ice-cap. He participated in the Round the World Race (1977–8) with a team from the School of Adventure run from his home at Ardmore in Scotland, and in 1992 led a team canoeing around Cape Horn. |
