| Astronomer, writer, and broadcaster, born in Maidstone, Kent, SE England, UK. He graduated from Sussex (1967) and Cambridge (1970) universities, becoming staff writer for the journal Nature (1970–5) and a member of the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex (1975–8). His first book, The Jupiter Effect (1974) was followed by over 50 others, including In Search of Schrödinger's Cat (1984), In Search of the Big Bang (1986), and biographies of Richard Feynman, Stephen Hawking, and Albert Einstein. His writings embrace climactic change, quantum mechanics, evolution, cosmology, and astronomy, and he has also written several works of fiction. In 1993 he became a visiting fellow in astronomy at the University of Sussex, studying the age of the universe. |
