After serving as US ambassador to Italy, he was elected to the US Senate (Democrat, New Jersey, 1865–6), but his right to take the seat was challenged. Forced to forfeit his seat, he was later re-elected (1869–75). He then returned to New Jersey, where he served as attorney general (1877–97). |
