| Mathematician and geologist, born in Benvie, Dundee, E Scotland, UK. He studied at St Andrews University, became joint professor of mathematics at Edinburgh (1785), and professor of natural philosophy (1805). He wrote an important textbook on geometry, and also investigated glaciation and the formation of river valleys. |
