| Inventor and physician, born in Saybrook, Connecticut, USA. He studied at Yale, then built the first US submarine, Bushnell's turtle, which was tried unsuccessfully against British ships. He was a continental army engineer (1779–83), then spent several years in France, returning to the USA in 1795 to teach and practise medicine in Georgia. |
