| Anthropologist, born in Waterloo, Iowa, USA. He founded the anthropology PhD programme at the University of North Carolina (1946–59) and the anthropology department at the University of Pittsburgh (1959–72). He directed a pioneering field study of southern American culture (1946), did extensive fieldwork in Central and South America, and contributed to the US government's Latin America policy. |
