| biography:
| Rugby union player and physician, born in Bridgend, S Wales, UK. He was an excellent tennis player as a junior, representing Wales, and winning the Wimbledon Junior Championship (1966). He studied medicine at St Mary's, London, and became consultant in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend (1986). He played rugby for London Welsh and Bridgend, as well as for Wales (captain, 1978) and the British Lions (tours of New Zealand in 1971, South Africa in 1974). When he retired in 1982 he was the most-capped Welshman with 55 caps and held the record for a fullback (54 - he played on the flank against Australia in 1978). He was later a Welsh national selector, team manager at Bridgend RFC, and is still playing junior rugby at the age of 50. He published his autobiography, JPR, in 1979. |
