| biography:
| Merchant and philanthropist, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The nephew of Thomas H Perkins, at the age of 16 he became head of Perkins & Co, his uncle's trading company in China. He conducted business affairs admirably (1803–30) and returned to Boston with a Chinese manner as well as Chinese servants. He built a conservatory, and his yacht, The Sylph, won the earliest recorded American yacht race (1832). He left an estate of $2 million. |
