| biography:
| Philosopher, born in Manly, Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. He studied at Sydney University, and held academic posts there, before becoming professor of philosophy at Otago University, New Zealand. In 1955 he returned as reader in philosophy at the Australian National University's Institute of Advanced Studies, Canberra, and held the chair (1959–79). Regarded as a principal exponent of the ‘Andersonian’ school of philosophy, he was president of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (1975–7), and his publications include the classic A Hundred Years of Philosophy (1957). |
