| biography:
| Pioneer and founder of Melbourne, born in London, UK. He travelled to Australia with his father, who had been sentenced to transportation. When the colony of Port Phillip was abandoned, the family were shipped to Tasmania. After being involved in various enterprises, John engaged a ship to explore Western Port and Port Phillip Bay on the mainland of Australia, and established a settlement at the mouth of the Yarra R, the site of the future city of Melbourne. The settlement developed into a town, and Fawkner became a member of its council. Later, when the new colony was separated from New South Wales, he was a member of the first Legislative Council for Victoria. |
