| Ballet dancer, choreographer, and artistic director, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. A choreographer with a large European following and a strong attachment to Germany, he danced with Stuttgart Ballet (1963–9) before assuming leadership of Frankfurt Ballet (1969–73). In 1973 he became director of the Hamburg State Opera Ballet, and has built it into one of the major companies in Europe. He is known for the acrobatically expressive contemporary ballets which match the grand themes and major composers he favours in his work. |
